MediTek Supports the Student Work Experience Scheme

The student work experience scheme is about young people, who are still at school, finding out about working life and work skills in general. It helps them to learn more about the world of work, understanding the workplace, working with other people, improving their skills and being able to communicate clearly with adults.
MediTek has always been a big supporter of the scheme over the years. The latest student to attend their UK factory was Matthew Long, a pupil from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who spent a week at the end of September working at the main factory at Fishburn, Co Durham.
The work experience scheme at MediTek is generally overseen by Technical Manager, Billy Walker, who explains what it means for the company and students.
“The jobs market has never been tougher, even more so for young people and the student work experience scheme is invaluable in giving teenage school kids a real understanding of the work place, what it is like and what is expected from them as potential employees. It can sometimes be a bit nerve racking at first, but most of them quickly settle in to the routine. You can certainly spot the bright kids and those with a strong work ethic in just a few days. MediTek is a proud supporter of the scheme because we believe passionately in contributing and helping the young people of our region get a head start in their working lives.”
Mathew spent most of his time making stairlift carriages under the supervision of Steven Walker, who had this to say of his latest apprentice:
“Matthew was a role model for all work experience students; he excelled himself throughout with great respect from all the lads on the factory floor. It was a pleasure to have him.”
And of his own experience, Matthew said:
“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and was a bit nervous to begin with, as I didn’t want to make any mistakes. But Steve, Kenny and the other lads were very helpful and made the whole week enjoyable for me. I would definitely go back if they’d let me.”
